Ever since I was a child, I’ve been obsessed with horror films. I can remember as a young boy trading grainy VHS copies of ‘video nasties’ in the playground with fellow school friends. The Video Recordings Act of 1984 did little to dissuade us: rather than disbarring us from gory films, in what can only be described as a classic example of a second-order effect, it gave us horror nerds a checklist for must-see films. Cannibal Holocaust? Check. I Spit On Your Grave? Check. I could go on, but you get the idea.

It was the various sub-genres of zombie films which fascinated me most of all. Especially Italian movies. When I think of the Italian masters, I think less of Titian and Botticelli and more of Ruggero Deodato and Lucio Fulci: visionary directors who revolutionised the Italian zombie genre.
